Dec 6, 2008
TAMPA (Bay News 9) -- Three teenagers broke into a woman's house and then stole her van with her wheelchair inside, police said.
According to the police reports, two of the teenagers knocked on the door of Joyce Maxwell's Tampa house on Friday afternoon with the intention of seeing whether anyone was home. Police said that, when no one answered the door, the suspects left the house, returned a short while later and then broke into the house.
Officers said Maxwell, who is disabled and lives alone, confronted the two suspects while on a pair of crutches. The report said the two teenagers grabbed her keys, ran out of the house and then drove off in her 1997 Chrysler van with Maxwell's specialized wheelchair inside.
According to the report, officers started searching the city for the van, and found it a short while later as it travelled through Sulphur Springs. They followed the van until it was abandoned at the 2500 block of East Diana Street, when all three of the suspects got out of the van and ran into the Grand Oaks Apartment complex.
The three suspects were arrested shortly afterward, when police said they found them hiding in the apartment in which one of the suspects lived.
Police said, on further investigation, they found Maxwell's wheelchair, which had been thrown from the van by the suspects.
Two of the suspects are facing charges of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, petit theft, grand theft auto, auto burglary and resisting officers without violence. The third suspect is facing charges of grand theft auto and resisting officers without violence.
In accordance with Bay News 9's Crime Guidelines, the identities of the suspects are being withheld until it is known whether they will be charged as adults.
