Some of the most interesting people on the planet are inventors. Did you know that Sir Isaac Newton is credited with inventing the kitty door?
Inventor, Mark Schuette has created a harness for a dog to pull a scooter. Schuette calls it The Dog Powered Scooter or "urban mushing." There are many applications for Schuette's invention, including pulling a wheelchair. One to four dogs may be attached with the harness.
"Since the rigs are on wheels it's only 4-5 lbs of pull necessary if the rig is on pavement. It would be fun to cruise around the National Monuments [in D.C.] with this rig," Schuette told DC Dogs Examiner.
Schuette also has a Trike Harness:
TheTrike is totally stable and great for the older crowd- or even some wheelchair people- handles like a sports car, and you can sit and pedal to help the dog. I did the lowest cost and safest method and one that the rider could always help the dog." explained Schuette.
Schuette has sold 900 unites in five years. He is pleased to find the excellent dog control offered- "which appeals to many people with wild, reactive, or aggressive dogs that need lots of exercise to release that energy." Dog safety is of prime importance, so only caring owners need apply. Please follow the recommendations about maximum rider weight compared to the dog's weight. Reduce or eliminate warm temperature usage. And heed limitations due to dog's age, physical ability, and drive.
Prices start at $250 for one harness plus cost of vehicle. Check the Dog Powered Scooter website for usage ideas and tips on training your dog with the unit.
